Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia (FSAI) returns for its fourth year to bring the best films from Australia and Indonesia to audiences in Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar, and for the first time, Bandung and Mataram, Lombok.
An impressive selection of Australian and Indonesian films will be screened at this year’s festival, including a selection of short films from Flickerfest, Australia’s world-renowned short film festival.
The festival will open with the Indonesian premiere of ‘Ladies in Black’, a coming-of-age film set in 1959 Australia, when the impact of European migaration and women’s liberation is about to change Australian society forever.
A not to be missed documentary about one of Australia’s most celebrated Indigenous artists, ‘GURRUMUL’, will also feature. Director and writer, Paul Damien Williams, will attend and greet film enthusiasts in Jakarta and Mataram.
Other Australian titles include the family drama ‘Storm Boy’, the alien science fiction thriller ‘Occupation’, and the highly acclaimed documentary ‘The Song Keepers’ – featuring the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir.
Back by popular demand, the festival line-up also includes works by Indonesian Australian alumni, including the modern classics ‘Ada Apa Dengan Cinta’? and ‘Ada Apa Dengan Cinta’ 2 from producer Mira Lesmana, who is this year’s Sahabat FSAI.
The FSAI also launches the Australia now ASEAN – Flickerfest Short Film Competition for young film makers from across Southeast Asia. A selection of the best films from the region will feature in the Flickerfest 2020 program. Creators of the top three films will be flown to Sydney for the Flickerfest award ceremony, along with professional development and networking opportunities with leaders from the Australian film industry. The competition opens on 1 July 2019!
FSAI 2019 offers a unique window into contemporary Australia and Indonesia, and a great platform to engage youth and celebrate Australian creativity across Southeast Asia.
Tickets to all screenings are free and available at fsai2019.eventbrite.com.
